Different Worlds:
Different Worlds was started by Chaosium to help support its entry into the larger world of role-playing. It was specifically touted as not being a house organ, although Chaosium products often had the prime advertising spots and a large portion of the page count. Published concurrently with Wyrm's Footnotes, it focused on a wide variety of game genres. When Tadashi Ehara decided to leave Chaosium he took DW as his share of the company. Its corporate structure is hard to follow. For a while it was Sleuth Publications. The last issue was published by Different Worlds Publishing. In 1983, from issue #28 until the magazine folded, RQ went into temporary limbo while being put under the aegis of Avalon Hill. As a result, RQ articles became noticeably fewer and farther between. My favorite part of the magazine was the back page column written by Tadashi under the pseudonym of Gigi D'arn. Its gaming industry news and insider info/gossip is entertaining and insightful. Issues #19, 20, 23, 25, 34, 39, 42, and 47 (last issue) have no RQ articles.

DW #1, Feb/March 1979.
Interview with Lee Gold, pgs. 21-22. In its early days A&E used to get RQ pieces from some of the original authors. No RQ is mentioned, but you find out about the fanzine.
Interview with Paul Jaquays, pgs. 24-26. RQ writer tells of his days as a designer. Not much on RQ. Now that he works for  ID software, he doesn't say much about the old days.
Cult of GEO, GS, pgs. 34-35. A better version is in Tales #3. Just an overview with no spells, stats, skills or the bouncer.

DW #2, April/May 1979.
Cacodemon Cult, Steve Perrin, pgs. 30-31. The first of its many cult write-ups. Expanded over the years, but never really changed from this core material.

DW #3, June/July 1979.
Interview with Steve Perrin, pgs. 8-10. He talks more about his helping found the SCA, followed by a little about the authors and their rush to get RQ out for Origins '78.
Three Feathered Rivals Cult, Ray Turney, pgs. 27-30. Not a serious write-up. Somewhat stupid, but mildly interesting.

DW #4, Aug/Sep 1979.
Waha's Quest, GS, pgs. 29-33. This is one of the few official pieces on HQ. It starts with a definition of heroquesting and the three types being play tested. The rest is a quest for  Waha followers that has trolls, the Trickster, and the Earth Witch. Some interesting magic items are defined.

DW #5, Oct/Nov 1979.
Cult of Apollo, Geoffrey Dalcher, pgs. 16-19. A competent gateway cult write-up, but dry and boring.

DW #6, Dec/Jan 1980.
Finding level in RQ, Ray Turney, pgs. 10-12. A good piece on converting your D&D character to RQ. The opposite is included, but MUST be ignored. Rurik is replaced with Daffyd the Daft (not a duck).
Vardy Combat System, John T. Sapienza Jr., pgs. 16-25. An AD&D variant that makes it more like RQ. Some of the tables look exactly like what's in the RQ2 rules.
Cult of Gestetner, Greg Costikyan, pgs. 34-35. A spoof Gateway cult of the god of Dark Duplication.

DW #7, April/May 1980.
Cults of Prax Review, Robert L. Snider, pg. 13. Not as good a reviewer as me, but his review is good.
Gloranthan Birthday Tables, Morgan O. Woodward III, pg. 14. Be born during Sacred Time and get a chaotic feature without the taint or get cursed.
Gloranthan Rune Calendar and RQ Training Record Sheet, GS and John T. Sapienza Jr., pg. 15. Maybe if they had told you how to use it might have some value, but noooo.
Foundchild Cult , Sandy Petersen, pgs. 24-26. Great stuff, but it's not much different than what is in Griffin Mountain.
Oriental Weapons for RQ, Sean Summers, pgs. 40-42. Descriptions of many oriental weapons and a half page weapons summary table. Sean knows his stuff. It could tie in with Land of Ninja.

DW #8, June/July 1980.
Zelan the Beast, Ron Weaver, pgs. 28-32. A great cult for shapechangers written in the RQ2 standard cult format. Zelan is the son of the troll goddess Zelana and Storm Bull. He's mainly worshipped in Beast  Valley.   This is very similar to a lot of the Telmori material in other issues and releases. Shapechangers (or Hsunchen) are once again painted as a misunderstood race. What the subject of Shapechanging needs is a unified voice instead of infinite rewrites of roughly the same material.

DW #9,  Aug/Sep 1980.
Cult of the Tiger, Steve Perrin, pgs. 34-36. Weretigers get their column width. Drink tiger's blood, but it's too bad there are no pictures of the Maidens of the Tiger. This is vaguely Gloranthan, but it was really written to be set in India. I suppose you could shoehorn it into the east somewhere, but it's not really Kralorelan. Steve is a versatile author on a number of diverse subjects.
Gateway Bestiary Review, Anders Swenson, pg. 45. I gave you a few sentences, and he gives you a whole page.

DW #10, Oct/Nov 1980.
Another Look at RuneQuest Movement, Morgan O. Woodward III, pgs. 24-25. The concept of movement allowances, who does what and when. Just what RQ needs, more number crunching! Please note the duck with a duck skull on his shield. Paul Jaquays and his art saves the day. If only they could have pried him away from TSR for RQ3.

DW #11, Feb/March 1981.
Duck Tower Review, Anders Swenson, pgs. 25-26. He returns to give Duck Tower a solid review.
City of Lei Tabor Review , Anders Swenson, pgs. 30-31. He bats cleanup for the overdue end of 10 solid pages of reviews. Too much detail on a rather boring module.
Cult of Kali, Greg Costikyan, pgs. 36-38. A gateway write-up of an Indian cult. The rune spells Strangle and Death-wish are creepy. This is an esoteric, but well written cult. It could be converted into an RQ assassin cult. Mr. C. had too much free time, maybe in a  Tandoori restaurant.

DW #12, July 1981.
Plunder and Rune Masters Reviews, John T. Sapienza Jr., pg. 24. John can write an article about anything. It's nice to see one that doesn't involve rules clarifications or character sheets. Was the reviewer Anders Swenson on vacation?

DW #13,  August 1981.
Cult of Erlin the Harper, Jane Woodward, pgs. 14-22. Donandar gets his rival in this detailed write-up. Over 20 musical instruments, with training costs and skill tables. There's even an earnings from performance table at the end. Pretty good stuff if you want to have your character be a musician.

DW #14, September 1981.
Come, Clash with the Titans, Larry DiTillio, pgs. 28-33. It contains Clash of the Titans movie monsters complete with RQ stats. A bad movie and article, but typical of the dated and cheesy movie review/game tie-ins over the years.

DW #15, October 1981.
Caladra and Aurelion, Charles Huber, pgs. 16-23. Too bad Charles never wrote more articles. The skills would make a dwarf jealous. The first appearance of the Acolyte profession is here, although I wish he had called them coneheads. Twinned priesthood is an interesting concept of joined abilities. The subcults of Tessele and Moray & Telerio are included.  Lots of info, especially for hot heads and volcano groupies.  This article was rewritten and updated (and lengthened) for Tales #17.

DW #16, November 1981.
The Cult of Indlas Somer, Angus MacDonald, pgs. 14-22. Everybody's gone surfin' in this RQ/Satire cult write-up. Battle magic includes Breaker, Amplification, Electrical Hookup, and Heatwave. Gifts include being a sex symbol and geases range from 'drink only alcoholic beverages' to 'develop a sexual kink'. Rune lords must have 90% Surfing  Totally awesome. The last and best silly cult.

DW #17, December 1981.
Ware Hall, Sandy Petersen, pgs. 7. An RQ solo scenario in the Big Rubble that is sprinkled throughout the magazine at the bottom of the pages. An interesting idea, but lacking in detail and events.
Enuk Manamee, Greg Wilson, pgs. 12-17. The fire god of the tundra nomads is written up for Eskimo aficionados. I would like to see the rune spells Freeze Fire and Suspend Animation in use.  A chillin' cult.
Questworld, Lynn Willis and GS, pgs. 24-30. A super long add for the boxed set.  It explains its purpose and the planet.
Cults of Terror Review, Patrick Amory, pg. 45. He does OK, but I miss Anders' reviews.

DW #18, January 1982.
The Tale of the Jolly Soldier, Ken Rolston, pgs. 30-35. Inspired by an Irish folk song, this scenario lets you brawl for the honor of a lady. One of Ken's few DW contributions.

DW #21, June 1982.
Creating Jolanti, Michael Maloney and GS, pgs. 30-32. A How-to for Dwarven giant makers. All you need is a Truestone or crystal, a dozen points of rune spells, a blast furnace, etc. Gonn Orta and the Faceless statue get a mention.

DW #22, July 1982. "RQ Special"
Cult of Dionysus, Michael Kolb, pgs. 8-10. The gateway cult write-up for feasting, fighting, and fornicating. A brief article with nothing new. Oh, the unwritten pagan possibilities.
Advice from Rurik, Steve Perrin, pg. 11. Rurik returns after Wyrm's Footnotes demise. We find out they played Trollball at DunDraCon.
RuneFix1, GS, pgs. 12-15. Rules updates for the teaching skill, learning languages, initiates using cult spirits, use of familiars, and spirit binding .
Eight New Weapons for RQ, Paul Cardwell Jr., pgs. 32-35. Atlatls, boomerangs, lassoes, bolas, bullwhips, caltrops, and dropped rocks are detailed, plus a summary table.

DW #24, Sept. 1982. "Dwarf Special"
Why I Dislike Mostali, GS, pgs. 10-14. He certainly does as he details their bland foods, narrow minds, and lack of humor. Bleak stuff. What happened to the fat and jolly halflings that wore Viking helms and went around being greedy?
Mostal Dwarfs Mythos, Magic, Lore, and Heresies, GS, pgs. 14-19. It has the most information outside of Elder Secrets.
Dwarf Weapons, Steve Perrin, pgs. 20-21. More guns for the dwarves. The blunderbuss, grenade, musket, pistol, and rifle are deadly.  The Dwarven tricks and traps are also here to enjoy. Only cannons are absent.
Dwarf Senses, Sandy Petersen, pgs. 22-23. He speaks on dwarf darksense, pressure sense, and heat sense. Makes sense.
TrollPak Review, Ken Rolston, pgs. 38-39. Another RQ insider takes his turn. It tells you more than I did, but I don't have a beard anymore.
Greg's youthful picture is on page 46.

DW #26, January 1983.
The Cult of Odin, Angus MacDonald, pgs. 16-23. A nice big supplement for Vikings.  Priests get to use Crack (the rune spell, not the drug). Runes and notes help jam-pack the article. There's even a bibliography of suggested reading.

DW #27, March 1983.
An Introduction to Pavis, GS and Steve Perrin, pgs. 8-11. A layout of Gimpy's tavern, a Pavis Timeline, and some designer notes. A nice little addition, but nothing critical.
SoloQuest Review, Anders Swenson, pg. 44.  Solid review.

DW #28, April 1983.
Winged Humanoids, Jane & Morgan Wood-ward, pgs. 8-11. A generic article outlining the culture & religion of a winged race called the Gwaefir. An RQ conversion is included.
Taigaluk the Hunter, Greg Wilson, pgs. 20-23. Questworld cult write-up for tundra hunters. Very detailed, although similar to Enuk Manamee.
Dragons Past 1: Gloranthan Military Experience, GS, pgs. 27-33.  This details on regional military matters and previous experience for PCs. A map, army activity chart and historical timeline are here. The Battle skill was reprinted in Tales #6.

DW #29, June 1983.
Advice from Rurik, pg. 38. RuneQuestions and answers. Always a solid contribution to understanding the intricacies of the RQ2 rules system. It usually closes loopholes.

DW #30, September 1983.
A Game Forever, Tadashi Ehara, pg. 43. RQ3 preview by one of the playtesters. Fairly neutral in tone, but critical at points.

DW #31, November 1983.
RuneQuest Companion Review, Steve List, pg. 38. No unknown facts are revealed.

DW #32, Jan/Feb 1984.
RuneQuest3 Preview, GS, pgs. 20-22. Greg goes into great detail to explain all that was  changed for the new edition. He also spends a little time covering why he wasn't trying to ruin the game but correct and expand many of the better parts.
Interview with Sandy Petersen, pgs. 28-29. Sandy is a good sport and tells good stories.

DW #33, March/April 1984.
Pavis Review, Steve List, pgs. 36-37. Another review of its contents.

DW #35, July/August 1984.
Playtesting RQ3, Jeff Okamoto, pg. 38. Playtester notes from Sandy Petersen's campaign.

DW #36, September/October 1984.
Where's Ogmar, Alan LaVergne, M1-M7 middle pullout section. A troll scenario with its moments. They used the art in Trollpak3. Too bad the cover makes you think the whole issue will be loaded with RQ magic spell articles. Cool cover nonetheless.

DW #37, November/December 1984.
What Happened to RuneQuest, Chaosium Staff, pgs. 6-7. Overview of the big changes made for RQ3. It really helps you understand what the transition will be like for all the die-hards who haven't made the conversion. It is not an apology.

DW #38, January/February 1985.
The Cult of Uleria, Sandy Petersen & GS, pgs. 6-7. This RQ3 cult was the last outstanding RQ rules article in the magazine.

DW #40, July/August 1985.
SoloQuest 3 Review, Steve List, pg. 32.

DW #41, January/February 1986.
RuneQuest3 Review, Steve List, pgs. 26-27. Could Anders Swenson be Steve's idol?

DW #43, July/August 1986.
Down Among the Dead Men, Oliver Dickinson, pgs. 20-22. Griselda tale.

DW #44, November/December 1986.
Bad Example, Oliver Dickinson, pgs. 36-37. Griselda tale.

DW #45, March/April 1987.
Pavis Quest, Anthony Gresham, pgs. 22-24. HQ with neat magic items.
Gods of Glorantha Review , Steve List, pgs. 28-29.
Good Advice, Oliver Dickinson, pg. 36. Griselda tale.

DW #46, May/June 1987.
Disease in Glorantha, Oliver Dickinson, pgs. 36-37. Not a Griselda tale, but an article on disease spirits.  It is here we bid farewell to Gloranthan articles.
